World Recycling Day: Reduce, Repair, Recycle

March 18 is World Recycling Day, an initiative of the BIR (Bureau of International Recycling).
It was created in 2018 with the aim of promoting recycling and raising awareness of its challenges. It was quickly adopted by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and ADEME (the French Environment and Energy Management Agency) to encourage the implementation of the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and raise awareness among the French population about the impact of their waste. With the creation of the #Lesbonneshabitudescampaign, ADEME brings together existing actions and solutions to help us limit our waste production and adopt more responsible consumption habits.
Recycling is often the main action taken when it comes to ecology, but in reality it is the last step.
Recycling involves destroying an item that will most often be replaced. It is therefore preferable to opt for other solutions before resorting to this.
Reduce
First, simply reduce your consumption and only buy what you really necessary.
To do this, it is essential to choose goods more carefully, favoring quality or easily repairable items in order to maximize their lifespan. It is now possible to consult the repairability index to guide your choice of certain equipment. For items that will only be used a few times, you can opt to rent or borrow them. More and more websites are popping up to offer these kinds of alternatives. You can also eliminate single-use products as much as possible, turn to DIY (Do It Yourself), and finally opt for products without packaging or in recycled/recyclable packaging.

Reuse
Many of our objects meet a premature end, affected by planned obsolescence or even perceived obsolescence when they no longer meet the latest fashion criteria or when a new model floods the market.
Care must be taken to ensure the longest possible life for your appliances, keep them or sell/donate them when they still work, and have them repaired when they break down. Recycle
When a device breathes its last breath, a new process must begin: recycling its components to save resources.
