World Recycling Day: Reduce, Repair, Recycle

March 18 is World Recycling Day, an initiative of the BIR (Bureau of International Recycling).
It was created in 2018 with the aim of promoting recycling and raising awareness of its challenges. It was quickly adopted by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and ADEME (the French Environment and Energy Management Agency) to encourage the implementation of the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and to raise awareness among the French public about the impact of their waste. With the launch of the #Lesbonneshabitudescampaign, ADEME brings together existing actions and solutions to help us limit our waste production and adopt more responsible consumption habits.
Recycling is often the first thing that comes to mind when we talk about the environment, but it is actually the final step.
In fact, recycling involves destroying an item that will most often be replaced. It is therefore better to consider other options before resorting to that.
Minimize
First of all, simply cut back on consumption and buy only what we truly necessary.
To do this, it is essential to choose products more carefully, prioritizing quality or items that are easy to repair in order to maximize their lifespan. Nowadays, you can consult the repairability index to help guide your choice when purchasing certain items. For items that will only be used a few times, you can opt to rent or borrow them. More and more websites are popping up to offer these kinds of alternatives. You can also eliminate single-use products as much as possible, turn to DIY (Do It Yourself), and finally opt for products without packaging or in recycled/recyclable packaging.

Reuse
Many of our possessions reach the end of their useful life prematurely, due to planned obsolescence or even perceived obsolescence—when they no longer meet the latest fashion trends or a new model floods the market.
It is important to ensure the longest possible lifespan for your devices, keep them or sell/donate them while they’re still working, and have them repaired when they break down. Recycle
When a device reaches the end of its life, a new process must begin: recycling its components to conserve resources.
